Social situation in the European Union

Article 143 of the Treaty on the European Union asks for an annual report from the Commission on progress in achieving the objectives of Article 136, including the demographic situation in the Community.

The report on The social situation in the European Union is published annually by the Directorate General of Employment, Social Affairs & Equal Opportunities and EUROSTAT. It deals with the quality of life of people living in Europe and provides a holistic view of the population and its social conditions as a background to social policy development.

The Report provides a review of population trends, living conditions and social cohesion in the European Union, focusing on a policy relevant theme each year.

2005-2006

The Social Situation Report — published annually since 2000 — aims at informing the public debate on social policy issues by providing key data and prospective analysis. It is divided into two parts: the first part is devoted to a special topic, which in the 2005-2006 edition is The Balance between Generations in an Ageing Europe, and is explored in depth and the second part consists of statistical portraits covering the full range of social policy issues and a data appendix.

2003

This year the Social Situation Report had as its special theme the health of Europe's citizens.

Life expectancy in the EU has increased by 8 years since 1960, with the average life expectancy in 2000 being 75 for men and 81 for women, one year higher than in the US. This can be attributed to better health and living conditions for European citizens.
